As I write this, Christians across Canada are praying, and some are fasting, hoping that we will retain religious freedom. The case of Trinity Western University is before the courts, and many of us are losing sleep over our right to hold covenants of behaviour in our public institutions. We are begging God for religious freedom.
This should be a concern for every Canadian. If we cannot establish a covenant limiting certain behaviours on the basis of our religious beliefs, what other religious freedoms will be limited? Will Muslim women no longer be allowed to wear coverings (full or partial)? Will shamans be allowed to determine who enters their rituals if they perceive that an individual is only there to counter what they teach? Will pacifists be faced with incarceration because of their deeply held beliefs? It's happened before. Could it happen here? Where does religious freedom begin and end? If we have the right to be "right," who does and does not have the right to be "wrong"? Who, in the broad context of Canadian culture, has the right to determine that?
That being said, this is not my primary concern. Our religious freedoms will fade. There is an overriding mindset that we must all agree on everything. Dissenters are seen as "wrong;" this, in a culture that also declares that there are no absolutes to right and wrong. This is where we're at. Our religious freedom is crumbling before our eyes.
My primary concern is the reaction of those who follow Jesus. How will we as followers of Jesus respond to this decline? Eventually we will lose our freedoms, our tax-deductable charitable status, our right to choose who can and cannot be members of our groups, etc. Jesus never promised that we would retain our freedoms, and never encouraged us to fight for them. Will I? Absolutely! But Jesus promised quite the opposite. He promised that we'll face persecution. How will we react? Panic? Anger? Hatred? Fear? Compromise? What kind of legacy are we establishing for our children and grandchildren? What are we living and teaching now that our children will mimic when their religious freedoms are completely stripped of them?
