Exodus 14:31 - Having seen the plagues, been led out of Egypt, been terrified at being hemmed in to the place God led them, seen God's presence in a physical pillar of cloud and fire protect them, passed over on dry ground through a sea split into walls, observed the Egyptian army's chariots literally fall apart and the sea crashing over them, drowning every last one of them, then... then they feared and trusted the Lord.
If we're familiar with the story of the Israelites' journey to the promised land, we know that it was a consistent lesson they had to learn. Human nature tells me that there were a verbal few who riled up the crowd to gripe... constantly... and the people gladly fell in line.
Lest I become smug and comfortable and mutter, "Tsk, tsk, tsk. Those stubborn Israelites!" I look into the spiritual mirror. What has it taken for me to fear and trust God? Too much. I'm not saying that He would have taken those hardships and lessons away from me if I'd have reached that point sooner. I just see normal human nature in them and in me; and yet, He lavishes His love and grace on me. I'm not being cliché. I'm astounded.
